Study Note

Paul recounts Christ's commission on the Damascus road: 'to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith.' The verse offers one of the New Testament's most comprehensive mission statements, linking illumination (darkness to light), liberation (Satan to God), forgiveness, and inheritance in a single string. Isaiah 42:7's Servant mission — 'to open blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison' — is unmistakably echoed, connecting Paul's apostleship to the Servant's liberating vocation.
