Study Note

The eschatological promise — 'when Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory' — grounds the ethic of Colossians 3:1-4 in the future revelation of the believer's already-existing but currently hidden identity in Christ. The present reality is stated in verse 3: 'your life is hidden with Christ in God' — the life that belongs to believers is real but not yet publicly manifest. The 'appearing' (phanerothesete) of believers with Christ connects their future glory to the same christological disclosure language used throughout the Pauline letters for Christ's parousia. The verse provides the eschatological basis for the entire paraenetic section that follows (3:5-4:6): the ethical commands derive their motivation from the already-established and soon-to-be-revealed identity of those who have died with Christ and been raised.
