Daniel's great confessional prayer opens with comprehensive self-indictment: 'we have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts.' The quintet of sin-terms (sinned, committed iniquity, done wickedly, rebelled, departed) exhibits the comprehensive formulaic quality of ancient liturgical confession, leaving no aspect of transgression unacknowledged. Leviticus 26's covenant curses provide the theological backdrop: exile is the consequence stipulated in the covenant for exactly this pattern of departure, making Daniel's prayer an acknowledgment that the exile was just, not arbitrary. Nehemiah 9 and Ezra 9 employ nearly identical structures of communal confession, showing this was a developed genre of post-exilic liturgy.
