Malaquías 1:14
But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the Lord of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.

The curse pronounced on 'the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing' extends Malachi's condemnation of blemished sacrifices (verses 6-13) to include deliberate deceit: the man who vows the best but offers the worst. Leviticus 22:18-25's requirement of unblemished animals for vows provides the cultic background — vows were especially solemn because they were voluntary and therefore could not be excused by poverty or compulsion. God's claim 'for I am a great King... and my name is dreadful among the heathen' grounds the demand for honour in divine character rather than ritual protocol — the nations' reverence for Israel's God makes Israel's contempt doubly scandalous. Jesus's citation of Malachi's priest critique (Matthew 23:16-22 on vow-making) and the NT's consistent theology of giving first fruits (Romans 11:16; James 1:18) continue this tradition of honouring God with one's best.
