Study Note

Jesus's commission of the Twelve includes the striking double metaphor: 'I am sending you out like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.' The combination of wisdom and innocence (or moral purity) addresses the temptation that vulnerability elicits: to respond to hostility with either naivety or cunning that compromises integrity. The serpent's wisdom draws on Genesis 3 but rehabilitates it — disciples must understand the nature of the opposition they face without becoming like their adversaries. Paul's description of the apostolic ministry in 2 Corinthians 4 and 6 embodies this principle: transparent ('open statement of the truth') yet strategically aware of the powers arrayed against the gospel.
