Nahúm 1:2
God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.

Nahum opens his oracle against Nineveh with a concentrated portrait of divine jealousy and vengeance: 'God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious.' The threefold repetition of divine vengeance creates an emphatic declaration that makes the book's theological center explicit from the outset. The divine jealousy (qanna) is covenantal — it is the response of a committed covenant partner to the abuse of his people, not petty personal pique. In a culture where Assyrian imperial theology claimed divine sanction for unlimited conquest, Nahum's declaration that the Lord 'will not at all acquit the wicked' (1:3) offers a direct counter-claim. Romans 12:19 ('vengeance is mine, says the Lord') cites the Deuteronomic parallel (32:35), applying the same divine-vengeance theology to Christian ethics of non-retaliation.
