Old Testament

Abishag, the beautiful Shunammite who served King David in his old age and was later sought as a wife by Adonijah.

Abishag the Shunammite was a beautiful young woman brought to care for the aged King David in his final years, warming him and attending to him, though David did not have sexual relations with her (1 Kings 1:1–4). After David's death, Adonijah's request for Abishag in marriage was interpreted by Solomon as a veiled bid for the throne, since possession of the royal concubines implied a claim to kingship—and Solomon had Adonijah executed as a result (1 Kings 2:13–25). Abishag's brief appearance thus becomes a pivot point in the succession crisis that established Solomon's reign.
