New Testament

Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus.

Bartholomew is listed as one of the Twelve Apostles in all three Synoptic Gospels and in Acts 1:13, though he appears only in the apostolic lists without any individual narrative. From the second century onward, he has been widely identified with Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, who is mentioned exclusively in the Gospel of John (1:45–51; 21:2). If the identification is correct, Nathanael was initially skeptical—'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?'—but upon meeting Jesus was overwhelmed by Jesus's foreknowledge of him: 'Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.' Tradition records several mission territories for Bartholomew, including Armenia, where the Armenian Apostolic Church counts him among its founders and he is said to have been martyred by flaying.
