Study Note

'And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely' — the divine 'It is done' (gegonan — perfect plural: 'all things have been made new') echoes and surpasses the 'It is finished' of John 19:30, marking the completion of all redemptive history. The Alpha-and-Omega self-identification frames God as both origin and telos of all that exists, and the free gift of living water to the thirsty fulfills Isaiah 55:1's great invitation while echoing Jesus's Samaritan-woman discourse in John 4:14. The verse brings together the entire Bible's water-of-life theme — from Eden's river to Ezekiel's temple stream to Revelation 22:1–2 — in a single eschatological promise.
