The event in Genesis 3 when Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, bringing sin and death into the world. The serpent's temptation appealed to desire, beauty, and wisdom (3:6). Consequences were immediate and far-reaching: shame (3:7), broken relationship with God (3:8-10), pain in childbirth (3:16), toil in work (3:17-19), and death (3:19). Yet within the curse, God embedded the first gospel promise — the seed of the woman would crush the serpent's head (3:15). Romans 5:12-21 explains how Adam's fall affected all humanity and how Christ's obedience reverses it. The fall explains the human condition; the gospel provides the remedy.
