Prophetic pronouncements of judgment beginning with the Hebrew word 'hoy' (woe, alas). Isaiah 5:8-24 contains six woes against the unjust. Habakkuk 2:6-20 pronounces five woes. Jesus delivered seven woes against the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 23:13-36), condemning hypocrisy, spiritual blindness, and legalism that neglects 'justice, mercy and faithfulness.' Amos 5:18 warns, 'Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord!' Revelation 8:13 announces three apocalyptic woes. The woe oracle is not vindictive but serves as a warning — a last call to repentance before judgment falls. The prophets pronounced woes out of grief, not glee.
