Zechariah 2:5
For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.

Study Note
'For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her' — the angelic measuring of Jerusalem in verses 1–4 is interrupted by this promise: the city will be unwalled, inhabited by multitudes, because God himself will function as both perimeter-defence and interior glory. The 'wall of fire' inverts the vulnerability of a city without walls (a terrifying concept in the ancient world) by substituting divine protection infinitely superior to stone fortifications. Revelation 21:22–23 draws on this same logic: the new Jerusalem needs no temple because God and the Lamb are its temple, and no sun because God's glory is its light.
