Study Note

Study Note

'And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.' This commission — the vocation of Israel as a whole — designates the entire people as a royal-priestly-holy community mediating between the holy God and the surrounding nations. The three-fold identity (kingdom, priests, holy nation) structures the entire Sinai covenant and becomes the template for New Testament ecclesiology: 1 Peter 2:9, Revelation 1:6, and 5:10 all apply this identity to the church. The vision is of a nation whose entire social life models covenant relationship with God — not a specialized priesthood alone but a priestly people.
