Study Note

'And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself.' The prediction that the Anointed One will be 'cut off' — a term used in the Hebrew Bible for death by execution or exile — yet 'not for himself' introduces a substitutionary element into the seventy-weeks prophecy. Patristic interpreters uniformly connected this verse to Isaiah 53's suffering Servant and the New Testament's atonement theology. The subsequent statement that 'the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary' was fulfilled in 70 CE by Rome, lending historical precision to the broader prophetic structure Jesus references in Matthew 24:15.
