Study Note
'But thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children' — the promise responds to Zion's despairing question of verse 14 ('the Lord hath forsaken me') by announcing that even the most secure imperial captivity cannot withstand divine legal advocacy. The language of 'contend' (yariv — to plead a legal case) frames God as Israel's covenant attorney prosecuting the case against the oppressor, anticipating the NT's intercession language (Romans 8:34). The verse has been applied in Christian missions contexts as assurance that no cultural, political, or spiritual captivity is beyond the reach of divine redemption.
