Study Note

'For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody' — the comfort of Zion is framed as re-Edenization: the reverse exile, restoration after wilderness, is imagined as return to the primordial garden state rather than merely political reinstatement. The Eden-garden comparison makes the new exodus (Isaiah 40–55) a new creation event, connecting the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants to the protological category of creation, anticipating Revelation 22:1–3's river-of-life-in-the-garden as the eschatological fulfillment of this promise.
