'Be broken, you peoples, and be shattered; give ear, all you far countries; strap on your armor and be shattered; strap on your armor and be shattered' — the drumbeat repetition of the imperative for the nations to arm themselves only to be shattered is a taunt-song asserting YHWH's inevitable victory over any coalition against Judah. The historical setting (Isaiah 7–8) is the Syro-Ephraimite crisis (733 BCE), when Syria and northern Israel threatened Ahaz to join their anti-Assyrian alliance, provoking Isaiah's Immanuel prophecy. The verse draws on the divine-warrior tradition, where YHWH's commitment to defend Zion renders human military alliances futile against Judah and doomed for those who threaten her. The passage anticipates the fuller development of Zion theology in Isaiah 36–37 and in the Psalms of Zion (Psalms 46, 48, 76).
