Study Note

'Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.' The verse is significant for its disclosure that the 'everlasting fire' was 'prepared for the devil and his angels' — originally designed for malevolent spiritual beings, not for humans. Human beings enter it through alignment with the rebel powers rather than with Christ, suggesting that damnation is not God's primary intention for humanity but the consequence of moral identification with evil. Revelation 20:10 and 14 describe the lake of fire as receiving the devil, death, and Hades — then those not found in the book of life.
