New Testament

Philetus, along with Hymenaeus, was a false teacher who had strayed from the truth and taught that the resurrection had already taken place.

Philetus was a false teacher in the early church who, together with Hymenaeus, taught that the resurrection had already taken place, thereby overturning the faith of some believers (2 Timothy 2:17–18). Paul likens their teaching to a gangrenous infection spreading through the body and identifies them as having 'swerved from the truth.' This realized eschatology denied the future bodily resurrection and was one of several proto-Gnostic errors that troubled the Pauline churches in the late first century.
