Murder

20 versets

The unlawful taking of human life, prohibited by the sixth commandment (Exodus 20:13). Cain committed the first murder against his brother Abel (Genesis 4:8). Genesis 9:6 grounds the prohibition in the image of God: 'Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.' Jesus intensified the commandment to include anger and contempt: 'Anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment' (Matthew 5:21-22). First John 3:15 declares, 'Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer.' The sanctity of human life as God's image-bearers is the foundation of the prohibition against murder.
