The understanding of earthly existence as a journey toward a heavenly homeland. Hebrews 11:13 describes the patriarchs as 'foreigners and strangers on earth' who 'were longing for a better country.' First Peter 2:11 addresses believers as 'foreigners and exiles.' Psalm 119:19 confesses, 'I am a stranger on earth.' The psalms of ascent (120-134) model the pilgrim's journey toward God's presence. Paul spoke of life as a race to be finished (2 Timothy 4:7). Second Corinthians 5:6-8 describes the tension of being 'at home in the body' yet 'away from the Lord.'
