Sadducees
A Jewish priestly aristocratic party that controlled the temple during the Second Temple period. Unlike the Pharisees, the Sadducees accepted only the written Torah as authoritative and denied the resurrection, angels, and spirits (Acts 23:8). They challenged Jesus with a question about marriage at the resurrection (Matthew 22:23-33) and were prominent in the Sanhedrin that condemned him (Acts 4:1-3, 5:17). Their power was tied to the temple, and the party effectively ceased to exist after the temple's destruction in 70 AD. The Sadducees represent the danger of reducing faith to political power and institutional control.
