Paul's declaration 'I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me' is the most radical formulation of union with Christ in his letters. The perfect tense 'I have been crucified' describes a completed past event with continuing present results — the death is settled, yet the dying continues as ongoing mode of life. The paradox of 'I no longer live' and 'the life I now live in the body' holds together the displacement of the autonomous self and the continuation of embodied existence. 'The Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me' is uniquely personal — the only instance in the Pauline letters where the atonement is expressed in the singular first person, making the universal event intensely individual.
