'There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.' Paul's declaration of unity in Christ transcends the three major social divides of antiquity — ethnicity, legal status, and gender. The baptismal context (verse 27) suggests this is a community-constituting formula recited at initiation, reflecting the early church's self-understanding as a new social reality. The verse has fueled movements for racial reconciliation, the abolition of slavery, and women's ordination, though interpreters debate whether the social implications are programmatic or eschatological. Colossians 3:11 and 1 Corinthians 12:13 develop the same boundary-crossing vision.
