Study Note
'And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father' — the trinitarian structure of Galatians 4:4–6 is elegant: the Father sends the Son (verse 4) to redeem those under the law, then sends the Spirit of the Son (verse 6) to apply the son-relationship to believers' hearts. The Aramaic 'Abba' (retained alongside the Greek translation 'Father') is a marker of the earliest Palestinian Christian community's prayer vocabulary, reflecting the intimacy of Jesus's own address to God in Gethsemane (Mark 14:36). Romans 8:15 uses the identical 'Abba, Father' formula in the context of the Spirit of adoption, confirming that this cry is a pneumatological signature of genuine filial relationship.
