Study Note
The culmination of the 'works of the flesh' list — which includes envyings, murders, drunkenness, and revellings — closes with the warning 'those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.' Paul's use of the term 'works of the flesh' (ergon sarkos) deliberately contrasts with 'works of the law' earlier in Galatians, making clear that freedom from the law does not mean freedom for immorality but freedom for the Spirit's fruit (5:22-23). The vice lists in Galatians 5:19-21 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 served as catechetical material in early Christian communities, defining the moral boundaries of the new covenant community. The inheritance warning is not a works-righteousness statement but a description of the kind of life that is incompatible with having received the Spirit.
