Study Note

'Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.' This paradoxical conclusion follows the revelation of Paul's 'thorn in the flesh' and the divine response 'my grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness' (12:9). The inversion of the conventional Greco-Roman honor system — strength through weakness rather than despite it — is Paul's most radical challenge to his culture's values. It has shaped Christian spirituality from the Desert Fathers through mysticism to modern theologies of the cross as the pattern of genuine power.
