Study Note

In the aftermath of the golden calf apostasy, Moses intercedes for Israel, and God's promise — 'My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest' — reaffirms covenant accompaniment despite Israel's failure. The Hebrew 'panim' (presence, literally 'face') suggests intimate, personal closeness rather than abstract divine assistance. Moses's subsequent request to see God's glory (verse 18) and God's proclamation of divine character (34:6-7) provide the most direct Old Testament definition of God's nature. The verse has been foundational for Christian theology of the incarnation — the divine 'face' becoming literal in Jesus — and for Jewish theology of the Shekinah.
