Old Testament

The Cherethites were a Philistine tribe that often served as royal guards.

The Cherethites were a Philistine or Aegean people group who served as elite royal mercenary guards in David's court alongside the Pelethites (2 Samuel 8:18; 15:18; 20:7). They were commanded by Benaiah son of Jehoiada and demonstrated unwavering loyalty to David even during Absalom's and Sheba's rebellions. Their name appears as early as 1 Samuel 30:14, where Cherethites are mentioned alongside Judahites in the Negev region. Some scholars connect them with Crete (Caphtor), the Aegean homeland of the Sea Peoples who settled the Philistine coast.
