Old Testament

Mamre was an Amorite and an ally of Abraham.

Mamre the Amorite was an ally of Abraham who, together with his brothers Eshcol and Aner, joined the patriarch in the military campaign to rescue Lot from the coalition of four kings (Genesis 14:13, 24). Abraham was entitled to a share of the spoils and Mamre's name is associated with the sacred oak trees at Hebron where Abraham established his encampment—a place that became one of the most significant sites in the patriarchal narrative (Genesis 18:1). His name gave the region its enduring designation 'the oaks of Mamre.'
