Brokenness
The state of being shattered by sin, suffering, or loss — a condition God particularly values and heals. Psalm 51:17 declares, 'My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.' Psalm 34:18 promises, 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' Isaiah 61:1 prophesied the Messiah would 'bind up the brokenhearted.' Jesus quoted this at the start of his ministry (Luke 4:18). Isaiah 42:3 promises, 'A bruised reed he will not break.' God's pattern is to work powerfully through broken vessels — broken bread feeds multitudes, and broken bodies become channels of grace.
