A method of instruction using questions and answers to teach the fundamentals of Christian faith. The practice has deep biblical roots: Deuteronomy 6:6-7 commands parents to diligently teach God's words to their children. Proverbs 22:6 instructs, 'Start children off on the way they should go.' Paul urged Timothy to 'guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you' (2 Timothy 1:14). Historic catechisms — Luther's Small Catechism, the Westminster Shorter Catechism, the Heidelberg Catechism — have distilled Scripture's teaching on the Apostles' Creed, the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and the sacraments into accessible, memorable formats.
