Charismatic leaders raised up by God to deliver Israel from oppression during the period between Joshua and the monarchy (c. 1380-1050 BC). The book of Judges records a recurring cycle: Israel sins, God sends oppressors, Israel cries out, God raises a judge to deliver them. Notable judges include Othniel (3:9-11), Deborah (4-5), Gideon (6-8), Jephthah (11-12), and Samson (13-16). These leaders were empowered by the Spirit of the Lord (Judges 3:10, 6:34, 14:6) but were flawed instruments of divine deliverance. Their stories illustrate both God's mercy and humanity's persistent tendency toward idolatry.
