Messengers called by God to speak his word to Israel and the nations. Moses was the prototypical prophet (Deuteronomy 18:15), and prophets served as covenant prosecutors, calling Israel back to faithfulness. Major prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel) and minor prophets (Hosea through Malachi) addressed themes of judgment, repentance, and hope. Prophets like Elijah and Elisha performed miraculous signs. They foretold the coming Messiah (Isaiah 53), the new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34), and the outpouring of the Spirit (Joel 2:28-29). Hebrews 1:1 says God spoke 'through the prophets at many times and in various ways.'
