The spiritual discipline of quieting speech and inner noise to attend to God's presence. Psalm 46:10 commands, 'Be still, and know that I am God.' Habakkuk 2:20 declares, 'The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.' Ecclesiastes 3:7 acknowledges 'a time to be silent and a time to speak.' Lamentations 3:26 counsels, 'It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.' Jesus often withdrew in silence (Luke 5:16). Before Pilate, he 'gave no answer' (Mark 15:5). Silence is not passivity but an active posture of receptivity, trust, and surrender to God.
