A solemn promise made to God, taken with utmost seriousness in Scripture. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 warns, 'When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it... It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.' Jacob vowed at Bethel (Genesis 28:20-22). Hannah vowed to dedicate her son to God (1 Samuel 1:11). Jephthah's rash vow had tragic consequences (Judges 11:30-40). The Nazirite vow involved special consecration (Numbers 6:1-21). Paul took a vow (Acts 18:18). Jesus cautioned against swearing oaths and instead urged simple truthfulness: 'Let your "Yes" be "Yes," and your "No," "No"' (Matthew 5:37).
