The Greek 'plērophoria' (full assurance) denotes not mere optimism but settled confidence grounded in God's promises and confirmed by perseverance itself. The verse counters both antinomian passivity ('assurance without diligence') and anxious works-righteousness ('diligence without assurance'), insisting that genuine hope produces active, sustained engagement. John Calvin frequently cited the relationship between assurance and diligence in Hebrews to answer critics who charged that Reformed soteriology produced moral indifference.
