Study Note
'Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.' The word 'opened' (tetrachēlismena) derives from a root meaning to expose the throat — the posture of an animal presented for slaughter — conveying absolute vulnerability before the divine gaze. Psalm 139:1-4 explores the same omniscience from a place of trust rather than terror, and together the passages hold the two responses to being fully known by God: awe and comfort. In context (4:12-13), the penetrating word of God and the all-seeing God function together as both warning and invitation to approach the throne of grace (verse 16).
