Jesus's declaration 'I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me' combines three of John's key Christological terms into one exclusive claim. In Johannine thought, 'way' resonates with the Jewish concept of 'halakha' (the walk of Torah), presenting Jesus as the embodied Torah. The exclusivity clause ('no one comes to the Father except through me') has generated ongoing theological debate about the salvation of those outside explicit Christian faith. The verse occurs in a Passover farewell discourse (chapters 13-17) addressed to bewildered disciples on the eve of the crucifixion, offering orientation — not primarily polemics — as its pastoral purpose.
