Hashum was an ancestor of exiles who returned to Jerusalem from Babylon.
Hashum was the ancestor of a family of 223 (or 328) individuals who returned from Babylonian exile under Zerubbabel, listed in Ezra 2:19 and Nehemiah 7:22. Members of his family later appear in the list of those who had taken foreign wives (Ezra 10:33) and in Nehemiah 8:4 among those who stood with Ezra at the public Torah reading. A leader named Hashum also sealed the covenant under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:18), suggesting the family's ongoing prominence in the restoration community.
