Old Testament

Tabeal was the man Syria and Ephraim conspired to make king of Judah in place of Ahaz.

Tabeal was an otherwise obscure figure whom the kings of Syria and Israel conspired to place on the throne of Judah in the place of King Ahaz, as recorded in Isaiah 7:6. The prophet Isaiah confronted Ahaz during this Syro-Ephraimitic crisis and declared that the scheme would not succeed, announcing instead the sign of Immanuel. The proposal to install Tabeal, possibly a foreign or pro-Aramean candidate, represented a direct threat to the Davidic dynasty that God promised to preserve.
