The Tartan was a high-ranking Assyrian military commander who led campaigns against Ashdod and Jerusalem.
The Tartan was a title designating the supreme military commander in the Assyrian army, not a personal name, and the biblical text refers to at least two different officials holding this rank. One Tartan was sent by Sargon II to capture Ashdod (Isaiah 20:1), and another accompanied Rab-shakeh and Rab-saris in Sennacherib's delegation to demand Jerusalem's surrender from Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:17). These incidents place the Tartan among the most senior Assyrian officers who conducted imperial military and diplomatic operations against the Levant.
