The most solemn day in Israel's calendar (Leviticus 16), when the high priest entered the Holy of Holies to make atonement for the nation's sins. Two goats were involved: one was sacrificed as a sin offering, and the other (the scapegoat) symbolically bore the people's sins into the wilderness. The people fasted and refrained from work (Leviticus 23:27-32). Hebrews 9:7-14 explains that Christ fulfilled the Day of Atonement by entering heaven itself with his own blood, 'once for all.' The annual repetition of Yom Kippur demonstrated the insufficiency of animal sacrifice; Christ's single sacrifice accomplished eternal redemption (Hebrews 10:1-14).
