Aner was an Amorite, one of the allies of Abram, who joined him in the battle against the kings who had taken Lot captive.
Aner was an Amorite chieftain of Mamre, near Hebron, who was a covenant ally ('lord of covenant,' Hebrew: ba'al berit) of Abram (Genesis 14:13, 24). He, along with his brothers Mamre and Eshcol, joined Abram's rescue expedition to recover Lot after his capture by the four eastern kings. When Abram refused to accept spoil from the king of Sodom, he stipulated that his allies—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre—should receive their share of the recovered goods. These Amorite allies illustrate that the covenant relationships of the patriarchal period extended beyond the boundaries of the later covenant community.
