Pride
Excessive self-exaltation and self-reliance that displaces God from his rightful place. Proverbs 16:18 warns, 'Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.' James 4:6 states, 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.' Satan's fall is traditionally linked to pride (Isaiah 14:12-15, Ezekiel 28:17). Nebuchadnezzar was humbled for boasting about his achievements (Daniel 4:28-37). The Pharisee's pride contrasted sharply with the tax collector's humility (Luke 18:9-14). First Corinthians 4:7 asks, 'What do you have that you did not receive?' Pride is the root sin from which many others grow.
