Study Note

The divine promise 'I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land' is the first stage of the extended restoration oracle of Ezekiel 36:16–38 — the sequence moves from gathering through cleansing (v. 25) to heart-transformation (v. 26–27) to agricultural abundance (v. 29–30) to covenant renewal (v. 28: 'you shall be my people and I will be your God'). The 'heathen' from whom Israel is gathered are the same nations before whom Israel defiled God's name (v. 20), so the gathering is simultaneously a vindication of divine honor before the watching nations. John 11:52 applies gathering language to Jesus' death as a gathering of 'the children of God who are scattered abroad,' suggesting a christological and ecclesiological fulfillment of the Ezekielian promise. The verse is central to Jewish eschatological hope for the ingathering of the exiles and to Christian interpretation of the church as the new gathered community.
