Old Testament

Anan was one of the leaders who signed the covenant during the time of Nehemiah.

Anan was one of the leaders of the lay community who signed the solemn covenant of faithfulness recorded in Nehemiah 10, in which the returned exiles pledged themselves to obey the Torah in specific areas: not to intermarry with surrounding peoples, to observe the Sabbath and sabbatical year, and to support the temple with tithes and offerings (Nehemiah 10:26). The covenant signatories represented the leadership of the entire restoration community—priests, Levites, and lay heads of households. Anan's presence among them indicates he was a recognized leader of a family group in post-exilic Jerusalem.
