New Testament

Barabbas, a notorious prisoner, was released by Pilate instead of Jesus at the crowd's demand.

Barabbas was a notorious prisoner in Jerusalem, described as a murderer who had taken part in an insurrection (Mark 15:7; Luke 23:19). At the Passover feast, Pilate offered the crowd a choice between releasing Jesus or Barabbas, expecting them to choose Jesus. Stirred up by the chief priests, the crowd chose Barabbas, and Pilate released him while delivering Jesus to be crucified (Matthew 27:15–26). This exchange—the guilty released and the innocent condemned—has been seen as a vivid illustration of the substitutionary nature of Christ's death.
