Old Testament

Evil-merodach was a king of Babylon who released Jehoiachin, the former king of Judah, from prison.

Evil-merodach (Awel-Marduk) succeeded his father Nebuchadnezzar as king of Babylon and in the first year of his reign, 562 BC, released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison after thirty-seven years of captivity (2 Kings 25:27–30; Jeremiah 52:31–34). He gave Jehoiachin a place of honor above the other captive kings and provided for his daily needs for the rest of his life. This act of mercy toward the Judean king has been seen as a sign of continuing divine providence over the Davidic line even in exile.
