Pharaoh Neco II, the ruler of Egypt, opposed King Josiah of Judah, installed Jehoiakim as a vassal king, and was later defeated by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.

Pharaoh Neco II (610–595 BC) was the Egyptian king who killed Josiah at Megiddo when Josiah attempted to intercept his march north to aid the Assyrians against Babylon (2 Kings 23:29–30; 2 Chronicles 35:20–24). He subsequently deposed Jehoahaz, Josiah's successor, and installed Jehoiakim as a tribute-paying vassal, imposing a heavy fine on the land (2 Kings 23:33–35). His campaign into Syro-Palestine was halted when he was decisively defeated by Nebuchadnezzar at the battle of Carchemish in 605 BC (Jeremiah 46:2), ending Egyptian pretensions to control Levantine affairs for a generation.
